Staying Safe in Queensland - Community Safety

As you settle into your new life in Queensland, it is important to understand the ways you can keep yourself and your family safe. This includes in the water, under the sun, driving, bushwalking and in the community.

It is important to be aware that if you are in an emergency in Queensland, or anywhere in Australia, you should telephone 000 for:

  • Police (www.police.qld.gov.au)

  • Ambulance Service (www.ambulance.qld.gov.au)

  • Fire & Emergency Services (www.qfes.qld.gov.au)

Community Safety

Feeling safe is important in any community and a close relationship with your neighbours is one of the best ways to keep your family and yourself safe in your neighbourhood. Talking to your neighbours is a great way to voice any concerns about the security of the area, and also a great way to get to know those living in your community. There are also online community groups on social media or Neighbourhood Watch, which can keep you up-to-date on what’s happening in your area.

Developing relationships with your neighbours also means that when you are away on holiday, you can ask them to keep an eye out on your property and you can likewise look away their property when they are away.

The Queensland Police Service also encourages a partnership approach with members of the community to address crime and safety issues. Police cannot help if they do not know what is happening. Communicating with police may help to solve your problem or make your community a safer place. If you know something that can assist police with a current investigation or know of suspect illegal activity, contact the Crime Stoppers. You can even keep your identity confidential. For non-urgent incidents like noise complaints and lost property, you can also contact Policelink

In an emergency, call 000.
